Which Quad?

Finding the Quad Bike That Best Suits You

For the vast majority of owners there is no need to go for a large engine. A 300 or 350 will do all your jobs with ease and if you go for a quad with a low ratio option such as the KLF 300 you will be able to tow very heavy objects easily. Where you intend to use your quad for a bit of fun too, then obviously a larger engine is the thing to go for. We are big fans of the Honda 420, this machine goes like a sports quad and you can select two wheel drive only so you can have a lot of fun.

Two or four wheel drive?

This depends on a few different things. Most importantly, is your land flat?

If so, then a two wheel drive will do the job perfectly. You will be surprised how far they go without any sign of getting stuck

If your land is uneven or if you will be towing a trailer or loading the quad up with feed etc then you need to go for four wheel drive

A two wheel drive will do 95% of what you need it to but it is more likely to lose traction which at the least will leave deep ruts in your field and at worst could leave you and the quad stranded.

Some quads have selectable four wheel drive. The advantage to this is when in two wheel drive mode the steering is a little lighter and you aren't wearing the front differential or drive shafts.

All quads have a proper differential in the front so even in four wheel drive the steering is manageable with no pulling or unwillingness to turn.

Automatic or manual?

No quads are difficult to drive in fact the most common thing we say to people is if you can ride a horse you can ride a quad. The only choice really is whether you want to be able to manually select the gears or not.

Even with the manual quads operation is very easy, you simply lift the foot operated lever up to select first gear then press the throttle and off you go, to go up another gear just release the throttle and pull the lever up again. To change down just press the lever down.

The clutch is fully automatic so it's just a case of selecting the gear you want.

Manuals are advisable if your land is very uneven. You are able to regulate your speed using the gears as well as the throttle and if you select a low gear the engine breaking will stop you going to fast down hill.

Automatics are very useful on a livery yard where different people will be using the quad. You simply move the lever into forwards and off you go, some do have a low ratio option which can be used for heavy towing or for coming down a steep hill where engine breaking is needed.
